Fifth Edition Options

Awesome Options: Signature Powers

You can teach an old adventurer new tricks!

Do you sometimes wish you had more interesting choices during combat rounds? Perhaps you think per encounter powers was one aspect of 4th edition you'd prefer hadn't been scrapped?

Awesome Options: Signature Powers is the solution to your woes! This set of variant rules introduces encounter powers, known as signature powers, into the 5th edition game. While these powers will be particularly interesting to players of fighters and other martial classes who often face the dull reality that their most effective strategy is to repeatedly hit things until they fall over, everyone can gain interesting new tricks from the implementation of this option, and they're not just for martial characters. Signature powers are not tied to any particular class and there are two types of signature power: maneuvers and thaumaturgies. Magic users will want to look at the thaumaturgies, but shouldn't discount the maneuvers from consideration! Most are tied to one or more of the six ability scores, including many that work best when used by characters with high Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma.

Fifth Edition Archetypes

Heroes of Song

Dance to your own tune with this collection of six music-themed archetypes!

In the many worlds of D&D, words and music contain actual, exploitable power. Those in the know can harness these mysterious, ancient forces, drawing forth the magic of music to bring tangible change into the world around them.

Bards are the archetypal hero of song, but they aren’t the only heroes to tap into the raw power music. Heroes of Song introduces six new archetypes, two for the Bard class, and four which introduce the power of music to other classes!

Heroes of Songincludes the following archetypes:
  • The Battle Skald, a Barbarian Primal Path. Warrior-poets, battle skalds keep the verbal and musical histories of their people, and sing songs of victory in battle to ignite a fire in the hearts of their war band.
  • The College of Choristers, a Bard College. Giving themselves and their musical talent over to the service of the divine, choristers lead their congregation in worshipful song, and channel the power of their faith through their voice.
  • The College of Creation, a Bard College. Bards of this college comprehend the musical underpinnings of reality, and can use their music to channel and shape elemental forces.
  • The Clarion, a Warlock Patron. An insubstantial being of pure music that hops from creative to creative as their muse, inspiring frenzies of creation uncaring for its current host's physical needs nor health. A Clarion-pact warlock can summon a pact instrument whenever they wish, and can use their music to inspire changes in the mindsets of their audience.
  • The Warsinger, a Fighter Archetype. Warsingers learn bardic secrets, channeling music and magic as tools of war. In battle a warsinger is able to perform battle anthems to inspire their unit.
  • The Way of Splendid Song, a Monk Monastic Tradition. Sometimes known as Chanters, monks of this tradition learn mantras, activated by spending ki. While continuing to focus on reciting a mantra, the Chanter gains special strengths associated with the mantra being performed.

Arcane Traditions: The Hedge Wizard

Learn to cast magic your own way with this new archetype for the Wizard class!

A Hedge Wizard is a magician who cannot access proper tutelage due to a lack of funds or willing teachers. They are entirely self-taught, and often the subject of scorn by their better educated peers. And yet hedge wizards are often brilliant—while they may be reproducing knowledge that is already well understood and studied, they are doing so without access to those teachings, starting from scratch. Frankly, it is a sign of their brilliance that they can reproduce the study of magic from first principles. And figuring things out for themselves teaches hedge wizards creativity, allowing them to make breakthroughs that may be missed by wizards taught in formal traditions. The footsteps they follow are those of the first wizards, and they are worthy of as much admiration. One day, your hedge wizard may prove it!

Hybrid Archetypes: The Fist Fighter

Face the world with nothing but guts and a pair of clenched fists as a member of this archetype!

Fist fighters are unarmed specialists. Unlike monks, who channel the mysterious power of ki to attain unworldly abilities, they face and overcome the challenges of the world with nothing but sheer grit and clenched fists. Fist fighters are most commonly found in underground arenas and seedy taverns throughout the world, plying their violent trade. But a few have loftier ambitions in mind. They take up adventuring to prove that their iron bodies are the match of magic, monsters, and the cold steel of weapon-wielding warriors. Foolhardy as such a quest may be, pure moxie can carry a fist fighter surprisingly far.

Martial Schools: The Legendary Hero

Harness mysterious powers to fulfill your destiny as a member of this archetype for the Fighter class!

Legendary Heroes are warriors tied up in a great destiny, often to save the world and defeat a deadly evil. Warriors first and foremost, legendary heroes are strong, steadfast, and bold. But their martial skill and dauntless spirit are not the only weapons at their disposal. They also inherit mysterious relics and powers, known as legendary gifts, which better equip them to face their destiny.

Oblate Orders: The Prognosticator Militant

Wield the weapon of foreknowledge as a member of this new order for the monk class!

The Order of the Prognosticators Militant is a sect of warrior monks dedicated to the Red Knight that seeks out children with divinatory gifts. Typically such seers as the Order recruits are blind, the price they pay for their sight beyond sight. In spite of their physical blindness, a Prognosticator Militant is far from helpless. They are taught to channel their divinatory powers to replace their eyes. In spite of their eyeless masks they flow gracefully through combat entirely unimpeded, a sight to instill fear in any foe.

Underhanded Archetypes: The Sapper

Explode onto the scene with this new archetype for the Rogue class!

Not all rogues favour a blackened blade in the dark. A Sapper is someone who has been trained as an engineer and demolitionist, and their preferred weapon is a lot flashier and a lot more loud. Often deployed by armies to undermine enemy fortifications, sappers find their skills equally valuable in ancient ruins and hidden dungeons. When their lockpick fails, a carefully placed bomb might do, and well-placed bombs placed on the way in might prove invaluable if the party needs to make a swift escape after disturbing whatever monsters lurk within!
